The handmade paper is produced in the Philippines by a ministry called Village Handcrafters. "The Village" supplies jobs for the extreme poor, known as "squatters", and those in squatter relocation areas. Churches are seldom found in squatter communities because the poor cannot tithe enough to produce an adequate salary for the pastor and his family. Often a pastor among the poor has to work 2 or 3 jobs to support his family, leaving the congregation without a full-time pastor when needed most, such as in emergencies or tragedies. This paper making venture provides profits which exceed the workers salaries, to provide bonus income for the pastor's salary and church maintenance. The paper is produced using old-fashioned, time consuming methods which are environmentally friendly and acid-free. Mission Gifts buys experimental and overrun papers from Village Handcrafters to produce this lamp series. Each lamp and candle cover is unique and no two are from the same paperstock. These art pieces are designed and fabricated by Wendy Regalado, an architect and designer in the hills of Antipolo, Philippines. Wendy is known to Mission Gifts from the Thursday Group of Artists of Antipolo, which the Merrills (CCDF) are members and co-founders of. Buying a "Light of The World" lamp or candle cover provides jobs for the poor, and brings light to your life!
